Whatcom County and Lummi Nation Reach Conceptual Agreement on Lummi Island Ferry Service

The Lummi Nation and Whatcom County today reached an agreement that will ensure ferry service between Gooseberry Point and Lummi Island will continue uninterrupted.

While much work needs to be done, there is a conceptual agreement for a 25-year lease with an option to renew for an additional 25 years. A program of traffic improvements to address the Lummi Nation safety concerns is a critical element of the conceptual agreement. In addition, an efficient use of expenditures and potential funding sources are under discussion.

Chairman of the Lummi Nation, Henry Cagey stated “It’s important to the Lummi Nation that we continue to be good neighbors within the greater community.” Whatcom County Executive Pete Kremen said of the agreement “I’m pleased that we are working collaboratively and have achieved substantial progress.”

Both the Lummi Nation and Whatcom County are committed to continuing to work in a spirit of cooperation to develop a final agreement in a timely manner.
