Chuckanut Drive to remain closed overnight due to rockslide

BELLINGHAM - Crews will keep both directions of Chuckanut Drive (SR 11)closed overnight approximately three miles south of the Whatcom/Skagit county line because of a rockslide Monday morning.

WSDOT geotechnical engineers will assess the stability of the steep slope Tuesday, Nov. 24. Engineers want to be sure the hillside is stable before reopening the road to drivers.

Crews cleaned up this morning's slide which included one large boulder and some smaller debris.

Access to several businesses along Chuckanut Drive is available from the south end of the highway in Skagit County.

In November 2008, several slides closed SR 11 for an extended period of time. One slide occurred just hours after crews closed the highway and brought down boulders the size of cars. You can view pictures of those slides by typing Chuckanut Drive into the search function on Flickr.com <http://www.flickr.com/> .
