Lummi Island Ferry Status Update

November 23, 2009

Whatcom County Public Works has performed an evaluation of the damaged wing wall located at the Lummi Island docking facility.  A plan for repair work is being developed.  The staff is contacting suppliers in the region to acquire the materials and it is hoped that the acquisition of those materials can be completed by early next week.

After acquisition of the materials is assured, staff will begin contact and negotiations with selected contractors who can immediately execute the repair work.  It is likely that Ferry operations may need to be suspended for one or two days to complete the work.  If this is necessary, every attempt will be made to schedule the work on the nearest weekend.  More details will be communicated when they become available.

The immediate need to keep the load limit for vehicles to five (5) tons will remain in effect until the repair work is completed – essentially until further notice.  Special accommodations will be arranged for public service traffic such as SSC, fuel providers, etc. with advance notice.

THE FERRY IS UNDER IT'S SCHEDULE OF NORMAL OPERATIONS . ALL OPERATIONS WILL BE SUBJECT TO SUSPENSION AND DELAY IN THE EVENT THAT WIND/TIDE CONDITIONS PREVENT SAFE DOCKING – DELAYS SHOULD BE EXPECTED UNTIL THE REPAIR WORK IS COMPLETED.

Whatcom County Public Works is working to make this repair as quickly as possible.  Thank you for your cooperation.  Further updates will be made as soon as information is available.
