Homeowner Septic System Classes



BELLINGHAM, —Whatcom County Health Department will offer a class for homeowners to become certified to do their own septic system inspections. Homeowners are required to take the class that will be held October 29, 2009 at 1pm.  Additional classes will be scheduled as needed to meet the demand.

As of April 2, 2007, homeowners are required to have an operation and maintenance evaluation once every three years for conventional gravity systems and annually for all other systems. Conventional gravity systems consist of a septic tank and drain field only.  Preference for the class will be given to those that are required to have an annual evaluation.


Certification Qualifications:
•    Own the property that the septic system serves;
•    Have one of the following septic system types: Pressure distribution, Pressure Mound, Pressure Mound with a Sand Filter,
•    Have had a septic system evaluation completed by a licensed Operation and Maintenance Specialist.

The county is making this education available so that homeowners may be able to save on the frequency of hiring a professional inspector.

The class is limited to 50 people
, pre-registration is required. The classes will be held  at  North Whatcom Fire Station #61, 9408 Odell Road Blaine  (space is limited to 50 people)   To register or for more information, call (360) 676-6724, e-mail Health_EH_Parcel@whatcomcounty.us or stop by the Health Department at 509 Girard Street, Bellingham.
