Whatcom County Sheriff's Office assists Buena Park Police Department
At approx 1700 hrs on 8-19-09 the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office received information that a person of interest from a homicide that occurred in Buena Park California (a Ryan Jenkins) could possibly be in Whatcom County attempting to make his way into Canada. Deputies from the Whatcom County Sheriff's Office, along with officers from the Blaine Police Department, agents from Customs and Border Protection, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement began searching for the subject. Mr. Jenkins' vehicle, along with an empty boat trailer were located abandoned at the Blaine Marina. Deputies assigned to Point Roberts Washington (a small community located at the southern end of a peninsula that is accessible by land only from Canada) received a report from a citizen that they had observed a boat being driven into the marina there by a male matching Mr. Jenkins description who was acting suspiciously. A boat believed to belong to Mr. Jenkins was then found abandoned in the marina. A perimeter was established and an intense search was conducted. The search failed to locate the subject and it is believed that he was able to successfully make his way north across an unguarded section of the border into Canada.
Canadian authorities were advised of the situation and assisted in the unsuccessful search from their side of the border. Buena Park authorities have been informed of the situation and we will continue to render any assistance that they require.
All inquiries should be directed to the Buena Park Police Department.
