Cold weather delays start of I-5 work in Bellingham
BELLINGHAM - Crews have decided to delay the start of panel repair work on I-5 near Bellingham by one week because of the recent stretch of cold weather.Night work was scheduled to begin Monday near Ferndale and Wednesday near the Bakerview exit in Bellingham. Instead, crews hope to begin work Monday, March 16.This five-month, $2.8 million I-5 pavement repair project is expected to employ more than 25 workers and three local construction companies.
If the weather cooperates, crews will close the right lane of southbound I-5 near the Nooksack River Bridge on Monday, March 16, at 7 p.m. Work will occur from 7 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays for up to three months. Crews will work south toward the Bakerview exit in Bellingham (exit 258).
Crews will crews will also close one lane of southbound I-5 between the Bakerview and Northwest exits (258-257) from 7 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.Wednesday and Thursday, March 18 and 19, to replace concrete panels. In order to keep drivers and workers safe, crews will close the southbound I-5 on-ramp at Bakerview Road during this work. Drivers will be detoured north on I-5 to Slater Road (260), where they can exit and make a U-turn to continue south.
This project will extend the life of I-5 by up to 20 years for the approximately 25,000 drivers who use it I-5 daily.
