Commuter Rail

Commuter Rail
METRO is finding ways to improve and enhance your transportation options. The vision for Commuter Rail creates a multi-county, regional integrated transit network. What does that mean for you? Less dependence on cars, less time spent in traffic, cleaner air and an efficient and cost effective way for you to travel.

METRO has developed commuter rail options for key corridors, and a long range study that may reveal other potential options. Evaluations for success include cost effectiveness and efficient multi modal connectivity.

Potential commuter rail lines being considered at this time are:

  • 90A - From Fannin South station to Missouri City (interlined with the Main Street Light Rail line)
    (See proposed map below.)
  • Westpark- From Hillcroft Transit Center to Fulshear (interlined with University Light Rail line)
  • US 290 - From Downtown Houston to Grand Parkway (See proposed map below.)
  • Galveston - From Houston to Galveston

The 90A commuter line has so far received the most detailed investigation, and the pursuit of federal funds to advance the project has begun through the New Starts Program.

Commuter rail is a regional transportation project, and METRO is coordinating with agencies such as TxDOT, HGAC, The City of Houston, HECTRA, Harris County, the Gulf Coast Freight Rail District, and the UP Railroad. These efforts are expected to create a dynamic transit system for riders throughout Harris and the surrounding counties.

It's exciting to contemplate the possibilities, and METRO is planning ahead so that we can all be prepared for when the future becomes the present. Commuter rail is one part of Metro's efforts to be the premier regional transportation agency.
