Burnett Plaza (Intermodal Terminal) Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: What is Burnett Plaza (formerly known as the Intermodal Terminal) and why is METRO proposing to build it?

A: This facility has been broken down into two phases. The initial phase will include a half-circle on the east side of Burnett Station. There will be vertical circulation down to a 4-bay transit center with access to a "kiss and ride." The future phase is planned such that residents, visitors and workers will be able to easily transfer between different modes of transit including light rail, commuter rail and METRO buses. It could also house various services and amenities for patrons such as a METRO RideStore, restrooms, food service, newsstands, gift shops etc.

Q: What are the plans for the Judge Hernandez Tunnel on Main Street?

A: METRO has modified the LRT alignment which moves the LRT bridge structure to the east side of the tunnel. This will allow the Hernandez Tunnel to remain open, until a future date when a Main Street by-pass located to the west of Main Street is constructed. The by-pass will go over the existing UPRR tracks and connect to North Main Street at Harrington.

Q: During earlier discussions, METRO also mentioned private bus companies and AMTRAK might also use this facility. Is that no longer the case?

A: This proposed facility is being designed so that it could accommodate other modes of transportation that could be phased into service, such as commuter rail, private bus carriers, and national passenger rail (AMTRAK). However, these facilities are not included in Phase I, and would not be constructed until funding and environmental clearances are in place.

Q: When will construction begin?

A: Construction of the project is expected to begin in fall 2010.

Q: Will any homes/businesses be acquired for construction?

A: METRO already owns some real estate in this area, and additional property will be purchased to construct the facility and access roadways. Discussions with affected property owners are under way.
